Rule #3: Do not confine a young puppy in his crate for more than two hours unless heâs sleeping. Hereâs the math: confine the puppy for a maximum of one hour for each month of his age; thus, three hours for a three-month-old pup, four to five hours for the four-to five-month-old, and six hours for dogs six months and older. Six hours is the max for any dog, regardless of age (except when heâs sleeping at night)!
Rule #4: Never use the crate for punishment. Successful crate-training depends on your puppyâs positive association with the crate. If your Golden associates the crate with âbad dog,â he wonât think of it as his safe place. Sure, you can crate your pup after he has sorted through the trash so you can clean up without being disturbed. Just donât do it in an angry fashion, but rather in a matter-of-fact, swift way before the puppy can process what youâre thinking.
TIME AND PATIENCE
With patience and diligence, your Golden Retriever will become house-trained within a few weeks. The key is to stick to a scheduled routine of potty breaks and lots of praise. Expecting a dog to instinctively know to relieve himself outdoors isnât reasonable. You are trying to manipulate the animalâs behavior so that he abides by our human rules. Donât get discouraged; it is possible. Millions of dogs are perfectly house-trained. Before you lose your temper with your puppy, take a deep breath and remember that training takes time. All your Golden Retriever wants to do is to please you. With dedication and determination, your puppy will be house-trained before you know it.
